Pie Media Group

Pie is on a London journey to find the most unique and intimate place to stay; Found! 40 Winks, is situated in a hip and trendy East London, and is very close to areas such as Shoreditch, Spitalfields and Hoxton. I was enchanted by the sheer beauty of the house and its unique ambience – its dreamy fairytale quality offering a welcome respite from the harsh realities of everyday life. The pleasure comes from engaging Mr Carter in some lively conversation over a cup of tea or cocktail, and the general sense of bonhomie and warmth to be found here. It reminds me a little bit of Alice in Wonderland with all my new favourite things in one room.

There is not a lot of amenities a ‘normal’ hotel would provide and little in the way of technology to dazzle you. (There is WiFi-phew) They pamper in more subtle ways, and there is certainly no shortage of intimate luxury at 40 Winks. Like the amazing beds which they hand built here in England by Marshall & Stewart, one of the world’s top bed makers. I love the very beautiful Egyptian bed linen, which they also have specially made… so fine, you also may mistake it for silk.

The bathroom has walls covered in hand-painted gold leaf and is one of the most glamorous details you will ever see. There is a carefully curated selection of books to read, and the house boasts a unique collection of art and curiosities, reflecting the passions of its owner, one of the world’s most celebrated interior designers.

There is even a ‘secret’ garden. London’s best independent cinemas just a moment’s stroll away and some of the world’s best shopping at Selfridges less than 15 minutes via uber. What they lack in conventional hotel facilities is more than made up for the uniqueness and charm of the experience which is why you will want to return.

Mr.Carter; In 2012 he was described as ‘perhaps the world’s most extraordinary hotelier’ by Gulf Life. He is passionate about 40 Winks, and is actively involved in its day-to-day management. He is frequently lauded as one of the world’s most influential interior designers by magazines like Architectural Digest, and has twice been shortlisted for the International Interior Designer of the Year Award. The Economist’s Intelligent Life called him an ‘elegant sliver of fin-de-siecle aestheticism’.
