Ben Pollex with a belt bag, from Benjamin Gordon

Ben Pollex is a passionate designer and founder of Benjamin Gordon, a Canadian brand dedicated to redefining men’s accessories. As the middle son of Elizabeth Hardy, the founder and head designer of Espe, Ben Pollex brings a unique perspective to the world of men’s bags. His mission is to empower men to confidently carry stylish and functional bags that align with modern masculinity.

Benjamin Gordon focuses on utility-inspired designs, ensuring that each bag is both stylish and highly functional for everyday use. The brand proudly supports cruelty-free practices and sustainability, aligning with the values of its sister brand, Espe. By choosing Benjamin Gordon, customers support Canadian innovation and timeless style.

Can you share your journey into the fashion industry and what inspired you to design accessories?

I graduated from high school during COVID and did not want to pursue a traditional education in an ‘online’ classroom. My mother had recently purchased Espe, a vegan handbag company, so it made sense to start working with her during this time. I was exposed to all aspects of the business, which was an amazing experience. It was then that I realized there were very few menswear bag lines available—especially cruelty-free ones.

What was the motivation behind launching Benjamin Gordon alongside your mother’s brand, Espe?

I caught the entrepreneurial bug while working with my mom, so I approached her and suggested creating a men’s line. Knowing I was a creative person, she said, ‘Let’s do it.’ And so, the Benjamin Gordon brand was born.

How do you define the aesthetic and philosophy behind Benjamin Gordon?

Our collection goes beyond the runway allure of men’s bags, focusing on real-world, wearable, and functional designs that cater to the everyday needs of the modern man. Drawing inspiration from utility-driven aesthetics, each bag is crafted to be both stylish and highly functional, with every detail meticulously considered to enhance usability in daily life. We are dedicated to redefining men’s accessories with our collection of utility-inspired, versatile, and stylish bags—crafted with a commitment to cruelty-free practices.

What challenges did you face when starting your own line of men’s accessories?

The biggest challenge was wondering whether the bags would sell! We started by introducing them to Espe’s customer base and quickly discovered that they weren’t just for men—they were also gender-neutral, as some women preferred utility-inspired, monochromatic designs. The brand took off much faster than I had anticipated.

Can you describe the design process for your first product, the Art Crossbody bag?

The Art was my first design, inspired by the perfect bag I wanted to carry—compact, with multiple pockets and easy access for my phone and essentials. It’s also versatile enough to pair with almost any outfit. I can grab it on my way out in the morning or wear it for a night out.

How do you balance style and functionality in your designs?

My style is quite minimalistic, but I still manage to incorporate plenty of functionality. Our Zak Backpack is a perfect example. The design looks simple, but it features multiple compartments for a laptop, a netted pocket for overnight essentials, and even space for a change of clothes.

What materials do you prioritize when creating your products, and why?

All of our materials—premium PU vegan leather—are cruelty-free, meaning no animals were harmed in the making of our bags. This is important to me as an animal lover, and I believe that making sustainable choices in fashion is the only way forward.

How does being a Canadian brand influence your design choices and business practices?

The PU material we use is perfect for the Canadian market. Our bags are weather-resistant, meaning you can take them out in the rain and snow, and they wipe dry and clean. I also ensure that the straps are longer so they fit over puffer jackets. The color palette consists of black and gunmetal hardware, which I believe is the best choice for all seasons in Canada.

Can you elaborate on the importance of sustainability in your work?

Sustainability means providing people with better choices when shopping for fashion brands. If we can design a product that people are happy to include in their wardrobe while also saving animals, then it’s a win-win.

How do you see the market for men’s accessories evolving in the coming years?

The men’s accessory market is poised to grow exponentially in the next few years. Men in North America are finally becoming more comfortable with carrying bags and wearing jewelry. You don’t have to look further than athletes—Jalen Hurts, Travis Kelce, and of course, David Beckham, who are leading the way, often seen fully accessorized with bags and jewelry alike. These early adopters are paving the way, and you will be seeing more and more men on the street with bags—those bulging front pockets filled with phones and wallets will soon be extinct!

What feedback have you received from customers regarding your products?

Our customers particularly love our bags for traveling. They are perfect for keeping valuables safe while on the go, all while ensuring our customers look stylish and on-trend.

How do you incorporate customer preferences into your design process?

We take into consideration any comments or feedback from our customers. For example, we added water bottle holders on the side of our backpacks after receiving a request.

What ways do you think your designs empower men in their fashion choices?

I like to think my designs do not compromise men’s masculinity. Benjamin Gordon Bags are utility-inspired and simple, allowing men to carry them without feeling self-conscious. We are also finding that our bags appeal to various age demographics, with sales spanning men in their 20s to men in their 60s.

What are some key trends you’re noticing in men’s fashion right now?

Men’s fashion is becoming more fluid, drawing from both womenswear and menswear. This is evident in the materials used, softer, looser fabrics, and the use of bolder statement colors. Athletic aesthetics are influencing menswear, with designers incorporating jerseys, sporty accessories, and collaborations with sports brands. This trend reflects a fusion of functionality and style. We see Benjamin Gordon fitting in seamlessly with most trends.

How do you envision the future of Benjamin Gordon? Any upcoming projects or collections we should look out for?

We strongly believe that BG will become a lifestyle brand, adding more accessories to the line as the business grows. We are also excited to expand into international markets. We will be showcasing at the Chicago Collective next year, which will open up new markets for the brand.

What personal values drive your vision for both brands?

Hard work and the understanding that not everything happens right away. It takes time to build a sustainable brand, but I’m here for the long haul.
